What to Do Before Your Remodel Starts

The days right before a remodel begins can feel like a whirlwind. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping the project on schedule and reducing stress for everyone in the home. Here is what we recommend homeowners do before the crew shows up on day one.

Clear the Work Area

Remove furniture, decor, and anything stored in the space that is about to be remodeled. If nearby rooms will see foot traffic from the crew, it helps to clear pathways there too. The more open and accessible the space is, the faster and smoother the work can move.

Finalize Your Selections Early

Decisions about flooring, paint colors, tile, and fixtures should be locked in before work begins, not made on the fly. Materials often need to be ordered ahead of time, and waiting on a decision mid-project is one of the most common causes of delay.

Protect What Is Not Being Remodeled

Cover or move furniture in adjoining rooms, and set aside anything fragile or sentimental. Dust and debris can travel further than expected during framing and drywall work, so a little extra protection in nearby rooms is worth the effort.

Plan for Daily Life During the Project

  • If a kitchen or bathroom is being remodeled, plan an alternate setup for meals or bathing
  • Set aside a quiet space away from the work area if you are working from home
  • Let kids and pets know which areas will be off-limits during the project
  • Ask about parking and access if a driveway or garage will be used for materials

Communicate Openly With Your Contractor

Good communication before the project starts sets the tone for the whole remodel. Ask questions about the schedule, what to expect week to week, and how decisions will be handled if something unexpected comes up once work begins.

Bottom Line

A little preparation before your remodel starts makes a real difference in how smoothly the project goes. If you are getting ready to plan a project, our home remodeling team is happy to help you prepare.
